In an effort to make classical music relevant to a wider portion of society, institutions and musicians are increasingly seeking new ways of engaging with partners, social themes and other types of music. Topics such as climate change, diversity and education are seeing an explosion of energy and attention, and organizations are seeking ways to bring these to the forefront in artistic as well as practical ways. The 2022 MCICM symposium will critically examine this area of interaction between classical music and society, exploring initiatives that seek to blur the traditional borders of classical music practice, while also discussing how such borders are still rigorously policed in certain circumstances.

The MCICM symposium will offer diverse presentation formats and more casual networking moments to engage in meaningful discussions. We will open the symposium with a roundtable discussion titled 'Orchestras, Ensembles and Impact', which will cover issues around the challenges of impact measurement for orchestra/ensemble organizations. Our keynote speaker, Prof. Eleonora Belfiore, is one of the world leading scholars in cultural value research and Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Inclusion and Cultural Diversity at the University of Aberdeen. For the parallel sessions, speakers will cover themes such as higher music education as a driving force of change, audience development, activism and classical music organizations, and technology within the practice.

Registration fee is €50. Students receive a discount rate of €10.
