Arts Management Quarterly

No 134: Generating Revenue Online

In recent months, some courageous arts and cultural institutions have proofed that visitors are quite willing to spend money on digital culture. In this issue, these examples shed light on how the cultural sector can develop not only exciting formats, but also an inventive mindset.

Digital cultural formats cannot replace analogue ones, right? Or is that maybe just our internal biased view as arts and cultural managers? Are we too attached to the aura of objects and live experiences? And do we therefore underestimate the preference of at least some parts of the audience for digital formats? These questions are difficult to answer without asking the audience themselves - or simply trying. This is what arts and cultural institutions from various sectors and regions have done in recent months. Here they report on their experiences. Spoiler: Not only are they often more successful than they thought. They also discover new forms of appreciation, creativity, and connection with colleagues and digital visitors.
