CEMETI ART FOUNDATION (CAF) Profile

Mission: Promoting the development of contemporary ideas in social life through visual art.
Goals:
- Conducting research and studying visual art documentation.
- Stimulating alternative education that uses various approaches and viewpoints.
- Reinforcing the visual art infrastructure in order to foster its dynamic.

It started with the activities of Cemeti Gallery (presently Cemeti Art House) which continued to be increasingly developing that it consequently required an institution to manage art practice in a broader scale. Therefore, in 1995, Cemeti Art Foundation (CAF) was established as a non-profit institution (which has a separate managerial infrastructure with Cemeti Art House) which aims to develop, support and promote qualitative contemporary art and other related field of arts, that are potential to bring out new visions, and in response to need for a centre for documentation of contemporary visual arts in Indonesia.

In the years since its establishment, CAF has sought to strengthen the visual arts infrastructure in Indonesia. Its core programs are visual arts documentation, research and education.

Since its establishment, CAF has organized visual art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas, as well as artist exchange programs, workshops, seminars, discussions, talks and other forms of alternative education; developed the visual art infrastructure in partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations (including schools and art institutes); gathered information primarily about visual arts in printed, audio and audio visual form, such as books, photographs, slides, and CD ROMs that record art works, exhibitions and performances as well as the texts of discussions, talks and seminars related art activities; and collected data about artists and their works. CAF draws on this database to carry out research on visual arts.

Our database ranges from artists data (curriculum vitae, creative concepts), books, articles on art from various mass media, posters, catalogues, exhibition invitations, pictures, slides, audio/video tapes, to papers from discussions, lectures, seminars and workshops. The database of CAF Documentation Center can be used by the general public. The range of usage interest is generally divided into these categories:

1. As both samples and population for scientific research conducted by art students for the purpose of thesis writing; local and international art researchers in Indonesia; art lovers and observers, as well as other parts of the general society.

2. As an apparatus/supporting medium for art appreciation, discussion, artists slide presentations, workshops and so on. CAF coordinates art appreciation programs in high schools and general communities, such as slide shows, video screenings and other activities supported by the documentation materials.

3. As promotional and publication materials of Indonesian art.

CAF also welcomes any contribution of data from any individual and institution of interest, to enrich the data collection and the library of CAF. In carrying out its work, CAF has built local, regional and international networks with partners working in the same field.
