IDEA 2007 World Congress for Theatre Education

IDEA 2007 - The Sixth World Congress of International Drama/ Theatre & Education Association

If we take the usual symbol of A as marking an excellent performance (we know it's exam-driven, but very local!) and sharp creativity, and the O as the peaceful circle in ancient human rituals, the theme in this sixth IDEA Congress is literally and symbolically expressed through its titles: We need to cultivate the human mind, heart and soul in everyone of us, not only be infused with professional knowledge and innovative artistry in different specialized contexts, but also woven by visionary, communicative and culturally empathetic eyes, ears and skin.
Not to mention the hearts of our kids who are living in the confused world, being barred by the drama of humiliation, fear, doubt and anger. Some of them grow up only to experience linguistic and cultural colonization, socialized inequality and dehumanized alienation. They are waiting for the real dramatic transformation. Only through intimate human hands can they be directed to the right soil to be transplantedto sprout ideas, to branch out relationships, to be seeded as the new strong generation.

What forms does the 21st century drama and theatre for emancipation take? How to construct the locally appropriate dramatic architecture with globally connected visions? What qualities are required from the able architects and engineers? Most importantly, what are the ideas and actions to be planted on the field of education? Asia, once an ancient locality for curious travelers, is now welcoming the world to share stories, to create identities, to voice out positionings, to propose values and to demonstrate praxis in diversified and integrated human contexts for curious learners.

Although we are excitedly acquainted with the subversive power of drama, we have always known that education is a gradual building process, as the Chinese saying goes, "It takes ten years to plant a tree, a hundred years to cultivate a person." But perhaps that is exactly and paradoxically why we think education is an urgent thing.
