Between Crisis and New Beginnings

The Culture Report, which doubles as the 2011 EUNIC yearbook, looks for the "glue" that holds European alliances together

Stuttgart, 04 January 2012 - How can Europe make clear what it stands for? How can Europe show that it goes beyond words and takes action? What are the advantages of a common European foreign cultural policy? And how can Europe benefit from its specific capabilities? Thirty authors from twenty countries answer these questions in the new edition of Culture Report. For Chinese author Yang Lian the old continent remains the centre of the universe, Reem Kassem puts big hope in the European cultural institutes in Egypt, and Horia-Roman Patapievici is won over by the joint concert of European cultures.
The Culture Report Progress Europe is published by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) and the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC). The fourth edition is being published for the first time as a yearbook for EUNIC, the umbrella organisation for European cultural institutes that made a new start in international cultural diplomacy and international relationships when it was founded in 2006. The worldwide 2000 satellite stations of the EUNIC member organisations in over 130 countries offer enormous potential for European foreign cultural engagement.

Along with EUNIC, European cooperation partners include the Robert Bosch Foundation, the British Council, Culture Ireland and Portugal's Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. This fourth edition is available in German, English and Portuguese.

The first edition provides a comprehensive review on European cultural relations. Media in Europe is the topic of the second issue. The third edition deals with the role of literature in Europe and the European book market.
