New Program Approaches Arts Management from a Global Perspective

DALLAS (SMU) HEC Montréal, SDA Bocconi School of Management and SMUs Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship program will finalize an agreement on May 30 to launch a new 12-month International Arts Management Master of Management Degree (M.M.). Beginning in fall 2013, the new M.M. degree will be the first to focus on issues unique to international arts management and to approach arts management from a global perspective. The program includes one semester at each of the three partner universities and will prepare students to manage and lead international arts and cultural organizations.
"As arts and cultural industries grow increasingly interconnected and global in scope, our new M.M. degree responds to the heightened demand for a graduate program specializing in international arts management," said Zannie Voss, professor of Arts Management in the Meadows School of the Arts and Cox School of Business, and chair of the Division of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship at Meadows.
Coursework in the new M. M. program will be focused on cultural policy, international law and the arts, cultural economics and the international art market, urban planning and cultural tourism, the international digital media market, and the strategy and governance of cultural organizations, as well as other areas of arts management. The three partner universities are each widely recognized for their existing programs in nonprofit arts administration, which combine standard management courses with courses addressing the unique challenges of leading arts organizations.
"Bringing together more than 50 full-time faculty members with expertise in arts management from three leading universities will give students access to an unparalleled pool of resources to create a foundation for their careers on the international cultural market," said Professor François Colbert, Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management, HEC Montréal.
"There is no better way to learn to be an international arts manager than to be immersed in a variety of cultures," said Professor Stefano Baia Curioni, vice president of the ASK (arts, science, knowledge) Research Center at Bocconi. "Learning how to be an international arts manager will mean learning how to define the future in a multicultural world."
"The new M.M. in International Arts Management is an important new addition to the Meadows Schools Division of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship, which offers degree programs combining courses in both business and the arts, creating graduates who are well-prepared to hold leadership positions in arts organizations around the world," said José Bowen, dean of the Meadows School.
