Arts Management Quarterly on “I’m a Little Alien. Arts Managers Working in a Different Cultural Region”

The international journal Arts Management Quarterly is dedicated to a visionary, cutting-edge cultural sector that is open for new theoretical and practical approaches, especially from the non-western world. The Spring issue 2020, to be published in March, will shed light on "Arts Managers Working in a Different Cultural Region”. Submission deadline is January 19th 2020.
Arts management is becoming more and more international. As a result of digitalisation and increasing tourism, cultural productions are more frequently used by people with different cultural backgrounds or even perceived from a distance. However, internationalization does not only affect programming in the cultural sector, but also the management of arts and culture. Here, tours and cooperation across national borders are part of the everyday working life. However, the mobility of cultural managers themselves appears to be somewhat different. As studies show, although many of them work with international colleagues, only few spend a long time abroad - or even in a different cultural environment. These are the people we would like to introduce with this issue. The idea is to point out the advantages and enrichments, but also the difficulties of an international activity in arts management.

By "long time" we mean one or more years, and by "a different cultural environment” we refer to a region that is completely different from your own home country. The following questions can be considered:

  • What was your reason for working abroad, why did you choose a distant region?
  • What experiences did you make there (both positive and negative)?
  • How was working in a cultural sector with different structures and conditions?
  • What did you learn about yourself, your work routines and the strengths and weaknesses of your educational or academic background?
  • Do you see the (cultural) world differently now than before?
  • Would you recommend other arts managers to have similar experiences, also with regard to their private lives? What should they pay particular attention to?
We would like to invite papers on "I’m a Little Alien. Arts Managers Working in a Different Cultural Region” from arts management practitioners, researchers and students as well as arts educators working in cultural organisations, political contexts, universities, associations and so on. We welcome contributions from authors coming any geographic background. If you would like to share your experiences with our readers, we would be happy to receive your paper paper.

Articles are expected to give personal (but not necessarily private) insights into your experiences abroad, but to also reflect on the question how these experiences have shaped your understanding of arts management in a globalized world and your work back home (if you are working in your home country again).

Submission & selection process

Please submit an abstract for your proposed article (no more than 400 words) as well as a short bionote by January 19th to office@artsmanagement.net. The editorial board will review all submitted abstracts and let the authors know about the publication decisions by January 31st.

The final contribution with a length of up to 1.500 words should be submitted by March 1st. Contributions can include references, if necessary. Images of the practical work of the authors as well as diagrams and charts are very welcome. After publication, every article will receive a DOI.
