Job Announcement: International Fellow/ Junior Scholar in audience development/ communication/ curatorial work at Lehmbruck Museum, Germany

The Stiftung Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum Zentrum Internationaler Skulptur is looking for an International Fellow / Junior Scholar whose primary field of expertise is audience development / communication / curatorial work. Start of employmentis April 1st 2016. Job location is Duisburg, Germany. The Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg is known for its collection of international, modern sculpture, a unique feature in Europe. Its singular combination of outstanding museum architecture and a sculpture park as well as sculpture sited in the urban landscape add to its prominence. In its temporary exhibitions the Lehmbruck Museum is committed both to doing justice to its internationally renowned collection and to promoting local and regional artists. This mixture has made the house an extraordinary place of communication between man and art and enables a journey through the history of modern sculpture from the greatest sculptors of the 20th century to the present day.

Focus of the Fellowship:

The aim of the Fellowship is the conceptual development and enhancement of better and more effective outreach measures for the museum. Specific responsibilities include the implementation of analyses of visitor demands and orientation as well as the development of own ideas and innovative instruments to improve audience outreach activities. The Fellow will be able to work with a renowned collection and well-established exhibition and communication structures. The result will be an audience orientation concept dedicated to optimising the development of (new) audience groups for the Lehmbruck Museum. Further, research results and insights will be made available to other museums via a symposium accompanied by a published documentation. This will give the fellow an opportunity to build a broad cultural and tourist network.

Requirements:

  • Currently based in a European or non-European country outside Germany
  • Contacts to the international museum world
  • Certified B2 German language skills
  • Additional languages (English, Dutch and/or French) are desirable
  • Expertise in a relevant field, e.g. Cultural Studies, Cultural Management or Art History
  • verifiable experiences in audience development
  • Practical work experiences in museums
  • Openness for interdisciplinary teamwork and ability to manage ones own workload.
Specific responsibilities:

  • Curatorial work
  • Conceptual development and enhancement of better and more effective outreach measures for the museum with a focus on rudimentarily developed target markets in the neighboring countries the Netherlands, Belgium and France
  • Implementation of analyses of visitor demands and orientation
  • Development of own ideas and innovative instruments to improve audience outreach activities
The position will be held on basis of an 18-month project contract (3,200 per month) with an average of 39 working hours per week. Participation in workshops, conferences, and events as well as building contacts with neighboring museums and international partners of the museum during the fellowship will be encouraged.

The fellow will be mentored by the director and can expect the support of an extensive academic program organized by the Federal Cultural Foundation of Germany.
