THE CULTURAL POINTS INITIATIVE IN BRAZIL

The Brazilian Ministry of Culture established in 2003 the edict for Cultural Points. This action aims to enhance cultural initiatives and projects already developed by communities, groups and networks of collaboration through arrangements with federal entities.

After having their projects approved, the proponents receives a total of R$180 thousand (U$100 thousand) in a period of three years. Among others, the purposes of Cultural Points are: foster culture, increase the visibility of the most diverse civil cultural initiatives and promote cultural exchanges between different segments of society. With a shared management action between public power and community, the Cultural Points projects raises a broad range of cultural venues and lowers the costs of cultural production. There are over two thousand Cultural Points distributed throughout Brazil. This public policy has been the subject of academic theses and starts being a model for similar government actions in countries of Europe and Latin America.
