Artificial Intelligence in Cultural and Creative Sectors

An upcoming Routledge edited volume on the revolutionary impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on cultural and creative sectors aims to explore the diverse applications and implications of AI in enhancing creativity, audience engagement, accessibility, operational efficiencies, and much more within the arts and culture sector. Chapter proposals deadline is May 15, 2024.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing cultural and creative sectors by unlocking new dimensions of creativity, audience engagement, accessibility, and operational efficiencies. AI’s contribution to creativity has led to the emergence of generative art (Zhou & Lee, 2023), where algorithms create original artworks, music, literature, and performances. This not only broadens the scope of creative possibilities but also acts as a tool for artists to explore new ideas and techniques (Ali Elfa & Dawood, 2023). As a collaborative partner, AI enables artists to transcend the limits of traditional art forms and venture into unexplored realms of artistic expression (Mazzone & Elgammal, 2019).

In terms of audience engagement, AI-powered interactive exhibits and personalized recommendation systems are changing how visitors experience art and culture (Marmolejo-Ramos et al., 2022). Interactive exhibits, responsive to visitors’ actions, offer immersive experiences that were previously unimaginable, making each interaction unique (Ioannakis et al., 2020). Similarly, recommendation systems tailor suggestions to individual preferences, enhancing visitor engagement and satisfaction. This personalization extends to accessibility and inclusion, where AI-driven language translation services and accessibility features make art and culture accessible to a broader audience, eliminating language barriers and enhancing the experience for people with disabilities (Mende et al., 2024).

Operational efficiency represents yet another domain where AI is marking substantial advancements. The automation of curation and archiving simplifies the handling of extensive collections, facilitating the easy categorization and identification of items (Colavizza et al., 2021). Powered by AI, predictive analytics can project attendance patterns and refine event planning and marketing approaches, guaranteeing that cultural entities remain pertinent and economically sustainable. Moreover, AI’s proficiency in analyzing visitor data provides profound insights into audience inclinations, enabling organizations to adjust their offerings to align with visitor expectations (French & Villaespesa, 2019).

AI’s impact extends to conservation and education as well (Abbasi et al., 2024). In conservation, AI tools can analyze and predict deterioration patterns of artifacts, aiding in their preservation and restoration. This technology offers possibilities for digitally restoring damaged artworks, providing insights into potential restoration outcomes without physically altering the pieces (Gaber et al., 2023). Educational initiatives also benefit from AI through personalized learning experiences that adapt to individual learning styles and interests, making cultural education more accessible and engaging.

Moreover, AI’s analysis of social media and visitor data offers valuable insights into public interests and cultural trends, informing programming and marketing decisions (Orama et al., 2022). This not only helps in attracting a wider audience but also in creating content that resonates with contemporary societal interests.

In conclusion, AI is transforming cultural and creative sectors by fostering innovation in creative processes, enhancing audience engagement through personalization, improving accessibility, streamlining operations, and providing insights for better decision-making. As organizations continue to embrace AI, they unlock new potentials for making art and culture more dynamic, inclusive, and enriching for communities worldwide.
